In the field of chip foundry, TSMC is dominant, and Samsung is the only rival that can compete with TSMC in technology, but the craftsmanship of each generation is a little worse. For example, the yield has perplexed Samsung for many years, resulting in Samsung's inability to catch big customers.
Take 4nm process as an example, Samsung has mass-produced two generations of 4nm, and once gave Qualcomm the flagship Snapdragon 8 series, but after Snapdragon 8 + and now Snapdragon 8, Qualcomm has also turned to TSMC 4nm, and the upcoming Snapdragon 7 + series is also TSMC OEM.
Samsung has also prepared the third generation 4nm process, which is in mass production in the first half of this year. Compared with the earlier 4nm process, the new version provides better performance. And the problem of yield, the biggest problem troubling Samsung, has also been solved this time, raising it to 60%.
Although compared with the 70-80% yield of the same grade process of TSMCSamsung's third-generation 4nm process is still a little worse, but it is qualitatively different from the previously rumored yield of less than 30%, which can greatly enhance the competitiveness of Samsung 4nm.
Although it lags behind the most advanced 3nm process, 4nm is still the main contract manufacturing process of TSMC and Samsung. 22% of the former's revenue still comes from 4nm, 3nm, and will have to wait until the second half of this year.
