According to reports, Amazon and Rivian are considering ending an agreement between the two sides and no longer require the electric carmaker to sell its distribution trucks exclusively to Amazon.
Amazon is understood to have told Rivian in recent months that it plans to purchase about 10, 000 trucks this year, which is only the lower limit of its previous purchase plan. Rivian then launched negotiations aimed at ending the exclusive agreement.
The exclusive agreement was first signed in 2019.
Amazon is the largest shareholder in Rivian, with a 17% stake. Amazon said the investment, as well as its plan to purchase 100000 Rivian trucks by 2030, would be an important part of its emissions reduction plan.
Both sides have been trying to cut costs in recent months, including layoffs.
