According to a notice issued by the US Department of Commerce on March 2 local time, 28 Chinese entities were included in the entity list on the grounds of national security and other unreasonable reasons, including Loongson. This is excessive.

First of all, the US used to blacklist companies that were ahead of US companies, such as Huawei, but Loongson was not ahead of US companies.

Founded in Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Loongson is a company that develops Loongson chips. It aims to industrialize the R&D achievements of Loongson processor by relying on the R&D technology of Loongson for more than ten years.

Loongson is a general purpose CPU independently developed by Institute of Computing Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since its birth, Loongson has become a big hit, because it is considered to be the main enterprise in China challenging Intel's position as the largest PC processor. However, Loongson has never caught up with Intel. Intel's new Xeon W series has 56 cores and a maximum CPU frequency of 4.8GHz.

Even so, the US even banned Dragon Son.

Second, the Loongson, while not technically leading the world, is very useful for China. Loongson has always been committed to independent research and development. All functional modules in the chip, including all source code including CPU core, are independently designed, and all custom modules are also independently developed. Therefore, Loongson is a domestic chip in the true sense, realizing autonomy and security, making China have a general processor for personal computers, servers and other information fields, which has an important guarantee for the security of China's cloud computing, data center and other industries.

The inclusion of Loongson in the list of entities is clearly intended to strike at China's general-purpose processor sector, as well as China's personal computer and server sectors.

In addition, the U.S. ban on Dragon Son will also affect China's supercomputer and AI fields. As early as 2015, the United States banned the export of technology to Chinese facilities related to the world's fastest supercomputer. However, since then, China has been able to build supercomputers comparable to the United States by relying on domestic chips such as Loongson instead of Intel chips.

China has overtaken the United States as the country with the largest number of supercomputers in the world, according to a 2017 list of the Top 500 most powerful computers. China now has 202 of the world's most powerful computers, the BBC reported at the time. That compares with 143 in the United States.

That may be one reason why the United States is angry with Longson. However, can the U.S. really stop the development of Loongson and Chinese supercomputers and servers? That's wishful thinking.
