Recently, China National Offshore Oil Group Co., Ltd. (CNOOC) said that in the area of Enping 15-1 oil field in the South China SeaThe first carbon dioxide sequestration reinjection well at sea in China has been officially drilled.

The well will be drilled and put into use in mid-April this year.

CNOOC said that this well will establish a ldquo; green channel for carbon dioxide reinjection formation & rdquo. It is estimated that 300000 tons of carbon dioxide can be sealed every year, with a cumulative storage of more than 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to planting nearly 14 million trees or stopping nearly 1 million cars.

Guo Yongbin, deputy general manager and chief engineer of CNOOC Shenzhen Branch, said that the offshore carbon dioxide storage and injection well was completely designed and implemented by China. It marks that China has initially formed a full set of drilling and completion technology and equipment system for offshore carbon dioxide injection, storage and monitoring, filling in the gap in offshore carbon dioxide storage technology.

After a series of key technical research, CNOOC finally decided to store carbon dioxide in the ldquo; dome-rdquo; geological structure about 3 kilometers away from the Enping 15-1 platform. This kind of geological structure is similar to an inverted ldquo; bowl & rdquo;, which is naturally closed and can cover carbon dioxide stably for a long time.

It is reported that carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage technology (CCUS) is recognized as one of the carbon emission reduction technologies with great commercial application potential in the world.

Prior to this, most of the carbon dioxide storage projects in China were sealed on land.
