Completely against the tide, Zhang Zhongmou intends to turn TSMC into MSMC, but this is just his fantasy.

I. the attitude of the United States towards TSMC

From the many attitudes of the United States towards TSMC in the past, we can see that the United States clearly supports local enterprises such as Intel. As early as two years ago, the United States asked TSMC and Samsung to hand in confidential data. Under their requirements, Intel quickly announced that the Intel 4 process was mass production ahead of schedule, which was suspected that the United States had leaked technical secrets to Intel.

The result is that in the end, the United States only gave 10% of the chip subsidy to TSMC, and even Samsung got a 13% share of the subsidy, while Intel, Micron and other local chip companies in the United States received more than 60% of the chip subsidy. It can be seen that TSMC's goodwill fed the dog, and the United States did not give TSMC anything in return.

After TSMC accelerated the mass production of the 5nm plant in the United States, it was found that the rising cost was far more than 50%. The United States lacked a sound chip manufacturing industry chain, and the United States also lacked chip manufacturing talents. TSMC was dissatisfied with the recruitment of employees under the circumstances of high salaries, and the recruited employees were also unwilling to work overtime and night shifts. As a result, the 300 key employees of TSMC who went to the United States could only serve as ordinary employees. Taiwanese companies supporting TSMC said that setting up factories in the United States could cause TSMC's costs to soar more than fourfold.

The high cost made TSMC miserable, but American chip companies said they would not bear the cost, rejecting TSMC's demand for price increases, and TSMC had to swallow the bitter fruit alone. From these signs, we can see that the United States does not regard TSMC as its own, and the reason why the United States forced TSMC to set up a factory in the United States is to get TSMC's talent and technology to help the rise of local chip companies in the United States and dig out TSMC.

Second, American chips have deliberately alienated TSMC.

For a long time, TSMC has relied on the leading chip manufacturing technology to gain the leading advantage in the chip contract manufacturing market, accounting for more than 50% of the chip contract manufacturing market. TSMC's chip contract manufacturing business has also made huge profits, with a net profit margin of 40%, which is very rare in the global chip industry, and the net profit margin of Intel is no more than 20%.

TSMC's huge profits are the envy of American chip companies. Qualcomm left precisely because of TSMC's expensive contract manufacturing prices. Qualcomm was TSMC's biggest customer for a long time many years ago, but since TSMC began manufacturing A9 processors for Apple, Qualcomm has given most of its orders to Samsung because Samsung offers lower prices for chip manufacturing.

Nowadays, there is a general decline in the performance of American chip enterprises, and American chip companies need to control costs even more. in addition to Qualcomm's sub-orders to Samsung, Nvidia and AMD also intend to give sub-orders to Samsung. They hope that Samsung can control and balance TSMC and reduce chip OEM prices.

The attitude of the United States is the same. As mentioned above, both Samsung and TSMC build 5-nanometer factories in the United States, while TSMC's investment is even larger-- as high as $40 billion, but the United States gives Samsung more subsidies, which shows that the United States is more willing to support Samsung. After all, Samsung is weaker than TSMC, and it is easier for the United States to control Samsung.

Now the Taiwan media have seen this clearly, thinking that TSMC's going to the United States to set up a factory is just a running company, and that the United States has not favored TSMC because of this, and everything the United States has done is digging TSMC. It can be said that Zhang Zhongmou originally sent the chip to the bright moon, but the bright moon shines on the ditch, and the United States is dragging TSMC into the abyss.

In fact, this is not the first time TSMC has had the American Dream. in the 1990s, it built a factory on the border between Washington and Oregon, and eventually closed down because of cost and other issues. now TSMC's speeding up the construction of advanced craft plants in the United States is likely to be another American nightmare that will eventually bring down TSMC.
