Chip guru and father of the Zen architecture reveals AMD Zen5 performance: Single-core improvements like a tiger

Back in 2018, AMD first confirmed that it had begun development of the Zen 5 architecture. Now, five years later, news has emerged that the Zen 5 Ryzen 8000 processor could be available as soon as the end of the year.

The performance of Zen 5 was revealed in advance by Jim Keller, the chip guru who once led the development of Zen architecture at AMD.

Jim Keller, CEO of Tenstorrent, a Canadian AI startup, shared the performance of Ascalaon, his company's RISC-V CPU core, during a talk at a university in India, and compared it to the Zen 5.

By God Keller's estimation,The single-threaded performance of Zen 5 is 30% better than Zen 4. Remember, Zen 4 is a 15% improvement over Zen3, Zen3 is a 30% improvement over Zen 2, and Zen 2 is a 6% improvement over Zen 2.

At the same time,The Zen 5 is estimated to be 18-20% faster than NVIDIA Grace (ARM architecture) and Intel Xeon Sapphire Rapids.

Of course, Keller's Ascalaon CPU core is not weak either, second only to the Zen 5 in the table by a minimum of 8%.

Second, the performance is based on a SPEC2K17 INT score;

Again, this review is focused on professional-grade cpus for data centers, servers, and so on, namely Zen5 EPYC (codename Turin, Turin), not consumer Ryzen desktops.

Keller also expects the Zen 5 EPYC processor to accelerate up to 4GHz and consume less than 250W. Keller's Ascalon can hit 3.8GHz in 200 watts.
