New Delhi: Apple has ramped up its investment in India in recent years, opening its first retail store and asking its suppliers to step up manufacturing of iphones in the country. The company has shifted production of its iPhone 14 series to India, but some of its suppliers, such as Wistron, have had to pull out of the market.
Earlier this month, Wistron, a major supplier of Apple, planned to withdraw from India and proposed to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and the Registrar of Companies of India (ROC) to dissolve its business in India within a year.
Wistron pulled out for a variety of reasons, including worker unrest, short pay and medical malpractice, which have caused the company to run into controversy in India.
In the wake of Wistron's exit, India's Tata Group plans to buy Wistron's iPhone assembly plant in southern India, which carries out the bulk of Wistron's production in the country.
In fact, Wistron is not just pulling out of India, selling its factories there,The result was to end the deal with Apple and terminate the iPhone contract manufacturing business, which had been Apple's third-largest contract manufacturer after Foxconn and Pegatron.
Wistron ended iPhone contract manufacturing mainly because it could not make money. In 2020, Wistron sold its domestic contract factory to Lishun Precision, withdrew from manufacturing in China and turned to manufacturing in India as required by Apple. Wistron was also the first company to invest in iPhone production in India, which was more than Foxconn and Pegatron.
Instead of making iphones in China, Make in India is not helping Wistron make money. On the contrary, the situation worsened. They tried to negotiate with Ping Apple to improve the profit of OEM, but Apple refused, and its influence could not be compared with the other two OEM factories.
For Apple, Wistron's exit from iPhone contract manufacturing and manufacturing in India didn't hurt much either, as their domestic factories were taken over by Risun Precision, which also got the chance to contract high-end iphones.
As for the Indian OEM, India's Tata Group has taken over, in addition to the main OEM Foxconn, Pegatron, not afraid of Wistron's withdrawal.
