Mozi's Survey Telescope discovers the first near-Earth asteroids: a threat to Earth

Fast science and technology news on November 24, according to the Zijinshan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of SciencesThe International asteroid Center recently issued an announcement confirming the discovery of two new near-Earth asteroids, mdash;—2023 WX1 and 2023 WB2, by the Mozi Survey Telescope.

This is the first batch of near-Earth asteroids discovered by Mozi's Survey Telescope.

The near-Earth asteroids 2023 WX1 and 2023 WB2 were first observed on November 18, 2023 with apparent brightness of 20.8 and 21.0, and apparent velocity of 0.513 and 1.006 degrees per day, respectively.

After accumulating data from several stations, the initial orbits of 2023 WX1 and 2023 WB2 have been determined, which are Apollo and Armol-type near-Earth asteroids, respectively.

Of these, 2023 WX1 is a potentially threatening asteroid (PHA) with a minimum orbital rendezvous distance of 0.0416 astronomical units and an estimated diameter of about 170m.

The main mirror diameter of the telescope is 2.5m and is equipped with a 765 million-pixel main focus camera with a large target surface. the core scientific goal is to search and monitor astronomical dynamic events and to carry out time-domain astronomical observation and research.
